Reunion Review by Marian, Jun 14, 2018
- In addition to a brand-new version of Heredis for Mac (Mac Genealogy Software), Heredis is also developing a mobile/iOS version, running on iPhones and iPads. They are looking for beta testers, according to their latest newsletter (French). Heredis calls for volunteers to test versions of iPhone and iPad.
- Pricing: $59.99 Mac App Store – Free Trial. Family Tree Maker. Family Tree Maker (FTM) is certainly the most well-known family tree software on Mac and the latest version of FTM 2019 for Mac is still one of the best.
- I've used other Genealogy / Family History software in the past but they don't compare to the MacFamilyTree 9 application. Even if you're just starting to keep your genealogy and history, this appliation is easy to learn, easy to use, and provides for the capability of recording not only names, events and dates, but history about family members.
I’ve been using Reunion since about 2000 but as my main database since 2008. These days I am using Version 12.
Family Group Sheet: I think Reunion gets some dismissive reviews because it ships with a family group sheet set-up that (by default) doesn’t print the lines for blank fields. Akk. Lots of meaningless reports for beginners and reviewers who haven’t found the needed check-box. I don’t know why LeisterPro sets itself up for abuse by shipping it that way. Clicking one box (questionnaire) in the report dialog causes it to create a conventional-looking family group sheet, and you can include any events and facts that you choose, including events that you’ve invented in the Preferences. I usually set mine up to include a list of each child’s children when I’m sending them to relatives.
Reporting in general: Reunion creates reports as PDFs, word processor documents, HTML, and RTF documents. In addition to family group sheets, it will create pedigrees, books, Register-format articles, descendant reports, web projects, etc. Not fan charts. The pedigrees show people in boxes that can be dragged around on the page, rather than the fixed-format that I learned from the paper charts we used in earlier years. I have used the web project report to create CDs with HTML (for non-genealogist-relatives) that had clickable family groups with sources and photos, so I could “publish” to the family without making our information public.
Gedcom, another vital basic: I’ve had good luck with Reunion’s ability to import and export Gedcom in a way that has been accepted cleanly by PAF, Legacy Family Tree, Ancestral Quest, Family Tree Builder, and Ancestry — except the Name Prefix and Suffix fields, as Tamara Jones points out. (Why hasn’t that been fixed in the last 10 years?) Gedcom compatibility is important — it’s our escape hatch to switch to other vendors’ products, now and in the future.
As I’ve aged, I have come to be very thankful for the fact that I can choose fonts and increase the font sizes on the data entry screens, family view, and source citation screen, as well as the reports. How to add signature in outlook app for mac. I like that I can redefine the information and layout that appear on the Family View screen, so I can immediately see the events that matter to my research right now, like military service, which isn’t in the usual layout.
I give the source citation screen a good work-out. As with a lot of the competition, it allows me to enter the fields to form a source citation; text that I abstract from the source; and links to images of the source.

Photos can be attached to individuals and appear in reports, as in other products. The links to them transferred well through Gedcom to Legacy Family Tree, which caused Legacy to look in the right place for them on the destination PC’s disk. I didn’t test this with transfers to other products.
What I would like to have in Reunion: An explicit place to attach a source citation to the relationship between parent and child. Lineage societies care a lot about this and want that citation. Why aren’t more software companies providing it? I can limp along by attaching a citation to the child’s name. Ios mac spoof app. Others have told me that in other packages they defined a new field for parentage proof and attached the citation to that. That still seems like limping to me. Legacy Family Tree gives me a place to attach parentage citations directly. Why not Reunion?

How to get an app to respond mac. What I would like to have in ANY genealogy package: A clear and quick way of linking to Person A’s fan club members, with the ability to cite sources that show them. We would all be doing more effective research if we could be nudged with a reminder of that abutter’s name and the document that names him.
